Life is all Beer and Skiffle…

Well, it is this Sunday (November 13) at the Whitmore Hotel, (Morphett Street, City) when The Cat’s Pyjamas hosts the Beer and Skiffle Sample ImageSession from 2 pm.

The Whitmore Hotel’s Peter Hogan has been running food-and-wine themed entertainment on Sundays:  Cajun Sunday, Tex Mex Stampede, and has now added British fare with Rock and Roll band The Cat’s Pyjamas serving up their take on Skiffle music.

“We researched the history of Skiffle exhaustively,” says Denis Surmon of The Cat’s Pyjamas, “and after five or so minutes were pretty tired but we got the idea that Skiffle is a vague yet broad musical genre starting somewhere in the early 1920’s and peaking after a revival in the 1950’s by artists like The Vipers and  Lonnie Donegan.

“We readily took on board the ‘vague’ and ‘broad’ bits but adhered to the spirit of the British Skiffle bands who tossed American folk and blues songs into the pudding bowl.

“From there it’s something of an organised train smash but lots of fun.” Surmon said.

The Cat’s Pyjamas features some of the cream of our local musicians on the Skiffle Session: David Rhodes on guitars and vox, Denis The Preacher Surmon on Stick Double bass, guitar and vox, Jeff Algra on drums and vox and Peter Martin on Guitar, harmonica, electric bass, whistling and vox. (Yes, he whistles - he has gifted lips.)

Skiffle Session with the Cat’s Pyjamas runs from 2pm to 5.30 pm Sunday at the Whitmore Hotel, 317 Morphett Street, ADELAIDE.

Gigs this week: Panic at the Daniel O'Connell Hotel, Saturday November 12. 9 pm kick off for fun and more fun.
